Ежегодно 4 октября отмечается Всемирный день защиты животных или Всемирный день животных. Дата была выбрана не случайно - 4 октября 1226 года скончался святой Франциск Ассизский, который оказывал помощь страждущим и гонимым, и считался покровителем животных.
Праздник был учрежден на международном конгрессе сторонников движения в защиту природы, проходившем в 1931 году во Флоренции (Италия), и призван обратить внимание человечества на проблемы остальных обитателей планеты.
